Mirissa

Whale Watching Coast

Beach

Mirissa is a crescent of golden sand on Sri Lanka's south coast, framed by coconut palms and facing the deep-blue Indian Ocean. It is the world's premier site for blue whale watching and one of the island's most beautiful beaches — unhurried, warm, and endlessly photogenic.

About Mirissa

Discover
Mirissa's Wonders

Mirissa sits at the southwestern tip of Sri Lanka's southern coast, a horseshoe bay bookended by rocky headlands and blessed with calm, clear waters from November through April. The beach itself — around 1 kilometre of pale-gold sand with a backdrop of swaying coconut palms and low wooden beach huts — manages to feel both vibrant and genuinely relaxed.

The main draw from December to April is whale watching. The deep waters off the southern coast lie along the migratory route of blue whales — the largest animals ever to have lived on Earth. These giants, up to 30 metres in length, surface regularly within 15 km of the Mirissa harbour, making this consistently one of the world's best places to see them in the wild. Sperm whales, fin whales, and spinner dolphins are also regular sightings. St. John Tours partners exclusively with operators who follow responsible whale watching practices, maintaining safe distances and engine protocols.

Mirissa beach itself is ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and simply doing nothing. The western end of the beach curves around a small rocky promontory — scramble up for the Coconut Tree Hill viewpoint, one of Sri Lanka's most photographed spots, where a solitary palm leans dramatically out over the ocean. At the eastern end, Secret Beach (locally known as 'Hidden Beach') offers more seclusion and calmer water for snorkelling.

Beyond the beach, Mirissa connects easily to the broader southern coast. Galle Fort is 45 minutes west; the turtle conservation centre at Kosgoda is an hour north; Tangalle's wild beaches are an hour east. Unawatuna — a popular snorkelling bay — is a 30-minute tuk-tuk ride. In the evenings, Mirissa's small strip of beach bars and restaurants comes alive: fresh-caught grilled fish, king prawn curries, and cocktails timed to the sunset.

Insider Tips

Before
You Go

Book whale watching boats in advance for December–March; peak season fills quickly.

Choose operators who cut engines when whales surface and maintain minimum distances — ask St. John Tours for vetted partners.

The sea can be choppy in the early morning — take motion sickness medication if prone.

Mirissa beach faces southwest — sunsets are spectacular from the Coconut Tree Hill viewpoint.

Avoid the beach May–October (southwest monsoon): rough seas, limited whale watching.

For the freshest seafood, walk to the working fishing harbour rather than the tourist strip.
